Taking Turns

“No, I’m sure. I’m sure.”

“You’re always sure,” Remus remarked.

Sirius studied the map with all due ferocity, watching the labeled dots move around. “Nobody can fool this map. So I’m sure.”

“Might I remind you that we only finished that map two weeks ago and we’ve hardly tested it yet, and if anybody can fool this map, it’s going to be somebody like Professor Slughorn, who can ooze around corners undetected.”

“It’s your own fault for having to deal with Slughorn,” Sirius said, without remorse. “You shouldn’t be so good at potions.”

“Right. That’s relevant.”

Sirius glared him down. “It’s not your turn with the map.”

“It’s never my turn with the map,” Remus retorted.

“Well, that’s your own fault too,” Sirius replied. “For being so agreeable and understated and letting me and Prongs walk all over you. Sometimes you’re as bad as Wormtail. If you want the map, just take your turn with it.”

Remus reached for it. Sirius held it above his head.

“Not now,” he said. “We’re trying to do something very important here.”

“Trying to steal chopped verbana for one of your stupid pranks is hardly what I would call ‘very important’.”

“That’s because you have no imagination, Moony,” Sirius said, shaking his head. “You lack vision. This is going to be spectacular. And Slughorn is safely in bed, so stop worrying so much about whether or not the map is working and just concentrate on listening for Peeves since we haven’t figured out yet how to make him show up on it.”

“I am listening,” Remus said. “I can listen and be irritated with you at the same time.”

“Okay.” Sirius eased into the supply closet while Remus waited impatiently outside. He came out a few minutes later with a small pouch, and Remus snatched the map out of his hands. “Hey! Give that back!”

“No. It’s not your turn with the map.”
