“C’mon, Yuu . . .”

Kanda’s eyebrow twitched. “Kanda. Kan. Da. Say it with me, Lavi.”

Lavi paid this oft-repeated refrain absolutely no attention. “It’s not like it’s going to be a huge deal. You’re already teaching Allen how to use a sword. So teach me, too. I want to learn.”

“I am teaching the bean sprout how to use a sword because his Innocence has evolved into a sword,” Kanda said, speaking slowly and deliberately, as if to someone mentally deficient. “He will serve the Order better if he can do something other than swing it around like a five-year-old with a big stick. You, on the other hand, have no need to know how to use a sword.”

“True, but ya never know when it’s gonna come in handy,” Lavi said.

“Unless your Innocence has evolved so it can do something moderately more interesting than grow and extend – ”

“Oi, Yuu, that hurts,” Lavi said, with mock petulance.

Kanda didn’t bother to reply. Replying would mean further discussion with Lavi, which was to be avoided at all costs. And he definitely didn’t want to admit that the seals Lavi could do with his hammer could come in quite handy, and were rather powerful. Why admit something like that?

“Anyway, you’re still wrong,” Lavi said pleasantly. He didn’t want to have a further discussion about the evolution of Innocence. Bookman’s words about leaving the Black Order if his Innocence started showing any signs of what Lenalee’s had done were still ringing heavily in his ears.

Kanda grunted but did not reply.

“When Mugen was in pieces down in Hevlaska’s chamber, you had a katana,” Lavi said. “I had a stick with a flag on it. And which of us got more beaten up? Me.”

“One could attribute that to a general lack of talent,” Kanda growled.

“Or, one could attribute that to the fact that I had a stick. With a flag on it.”

Kanda’s glare did not abate. “Since that situation is certainly never going to happen again, then I see no reason to waste my valuable time teaching you how to use a sword. So stop wasting yours by pestering me.”

“You’re so mean, Yuu . . . wouldn’t it be easier to just teach me, so you wouldn’t have to listen to my pestering?”

Kanda had to admit that Lavi had something of a point there.

His eyebrow twitched.

“Hah! You know I’m right!” Lavi crowed. “Your eyebrow always twitches when you know I’m right, ‘cause it annoys you that you’re gonna have to agree with me.”

Sometimes, Kanda thought that Lavi was a little too observant for his own good.
