Letters Home

A/N: Simon/Kaylee is my OTP for this series. ^_^

Simon glanced up as Kaylee stuck her head into his room. “Whatcha doin’?” she asked, with her usual smile.

“Writing letters . . . to my parents,” Simon said, gesturing at the computer screen. “I know that I can’t ever send them, but sometimes it helps.”

She walked the rest of the way in and sat down on his bed. “Do you miss them?”

“Sometimes,” he said. “I get homesick. But there’s nowhere that I’d rather be.”

Kaylee smiled at him – that is to say, her smile brightened, as it almost never left her face for more than a few moments. “So what do you write?”

“Oh . . . depends on the day,” he said. “Sometimes I just tell them about my life. Sometimes I tell them about the crew, about Serenity. I can never really write the letter I want to write. ‘Dear Dad: I just want you to know that I was right all along, and that River’s brain has scalpel scars from where they cut into it. Thanks for abandoning us when we needed you most. Thanks for believing in us. Love, Simon. PS: That whole mess about Miranda and the subsequent deterioration of the Alliance was all our fault, too. I hope you’re proud of us.’”

“Aw, Simon, that ain’t no way to write a letter,” Kaylee said reprovingly. “I didn’t know you had such a bitter streak!”

He shrugged slightly. “I didn’t know I did either, until this happened.”

“Whyn’t you write them about the good news?” she asked.

Simon laughed, an abrupt noise. “That would be an even shorter letter. ‘Dear Dad: I’m out on the rim, saving the universe. You probably wouldn’t even recognize me. Love, Simon.’”

Kaylee settled into his lap. “Ain’t there anything you want to tell them?”

“Well . . .” Simon’s face slowly split into its own smile. “Dear Dad: I’m out on the rim, saving the universe. And I’ve met a lovely . . . beautiful . . . charming young lady, who always sees the bright side of things, no matter how many times Captain Reynolds threatens to throw her in the hold.”

Kaylee nodded seriously. “Now, there, see?” she said. “Don’t that make you feel better?”

“Of course it does,” Simon said. “You always do.”
